There are many potential reasons why people who identify as LGBTQ might turn to drugs and alcohol to cope. Some believe it could be a reaction to the homophobia, discrimination, or violence they sometimes experience.. Many individuals within the LGBTQ community still struggle with stigma and discrimination on a daily basis. According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health done by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 9% of the general population have substance use disorders compared to 30% of gay and transgender individuals that have substance use disorders. As a community, it is important to note and validate the many challenges LGBTQ individuals have to go through, and how important is to have resources available to prevent and help LGBTQ individuals to cope better with their lives and substance use disorders.
